Riverside, named for its location next to the Santa Ana River, is the county seat of Riverside County. The Downtown Riverside neighborhood serves as the urban and cultural hub of the Inland Empire metropolitan area. Riverside’s grid-like design and shady tree lined streets maintain the walkable characteristics of older California cities and the area boasts over a dozen sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Riverside supports a diverse workforce in the manufacturing, industrial and agricultural industries. The area has several factories, various financial offices and brokerage firms, numerous restaurants, and an array of retail stores. Riverside is also the birthplace of the California citrus industry and home to the last of the state’s original naval orange trees. Despite the urbanization of agricultural lands, citrus farms and packing houses still employ many local workers.
