California residents have to deal with long-lasting injury after crashes. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one type they may face. But how do TBIs affect a victim? In what way can they impact a life?

Today, we will look at the impact TBIs have on someone’s mental health. We will look at the way TBIs interact with issues like anxiety and depression.

The relation between TBIs and mental health

The Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center looks into this. They discuss how head injuries may trigger struggles with other mental health issues. This can include depression. Studies show that head injuries exacerbate pre-existing mental problems. For example, a person with depression may fall into a depressive spiral. In some cases, the victim even shows suicidal tendencies. Victims who suffer from anxiety may also deal with increased anxiety. This may lead to a victim developing agoraphobia or other social phobias.

TBIs, anxiety and depression

This does not only apply to people with past histories of mental health issues, though. It may trigger the occurrence of depression or anxiety even in people with no history. Other mental health issues may happen, too. For example, some TBI victims struggle with post traumatic stress disorder. Others may develop phobias that do not relate to social anxiety. This can include a fear of cars. In extreme cases, someone may become agoraphobic. This means they are afraid to leave their house due to dangers outside of it.

TBI victims suffer from a wide variety of issues related to the injury itself. Understanding this is important for handling TBI victims or coping with TBI injuries.
